DECADES OF INNOVATION
Shelley Boyce – a healthcare professional with both a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business – founded MedRisk in 1994 to solve a very specific problem. While managed care organizations were providing cost containment and efficiencies in numerous healthcare service sectors, physical medicine for workers’ compensation had been left out.
In workers’ comp, carriers and TPAs had no one they could trust to effectively manage physical therapy, occupational therapy or chiropractic utilization – an often overlooked driver of escalating medical costs. Claims office professionals struggled to manage multiple visits and requests for continued treatment with no access to administrative support or clinical treatment guidelines. As a result, the quality of patient care and return-to-work results were less than optimal.
Boyce knew there had to be a better way – and there was: MedRisk. The company revolutionized the way workers’ comp cases were handled, delivering unprecedented levels of clinical oversight, access to a credentialed, nationwide network of providers, and personalized service from referral to the end of treatment. The industry’s response was overwhelmingly positive, and sustained growth followed.
