Mary O’Donoghue, RN, and Chief Clinical and Product Officer for MedRisk, will moderate “When Good Shoulders Go Bad,” a medical session of the Workers’ Compensation Education Conference. Panelists weigh the risk and benefits of operative and non-operative treatment of rotator cuff tears.

“The size and acuity of the tear and the age of the injured employee need to be factored into the decision,” O’Donoghue said. “The risks are unnecessary surgery or irreversible, adverse changes associated with prolonged nonsurgical care. Clear communication among the treating physician, radiologist, physical therapist, orthopedic surgeon, and patient produces the best outcomes.”
